brett361975 Posted 23 July , 2009 Share Posted 23 July , 2009 Can anyone help with any information regarding the 10th Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers covering the period July 1st to July 31st 1916, or better still does anyone have copies of the battalion war diarys covering this period? I am looking into the service of Pte 15668 John Linham who died 27.7.1916. Any information would be most useful. Thank you for your time Regards Brett
Mark Hone Posted 23 July , 2009 Share Posted 23 July , 2009 The War Diary of this battalion was published privately after the war. It very usefully includes a full casualty listing for each action. Private Linham is recorded as killed in action on the night of 19th/20th July, when the battalion suffered severe losses in a disastrous attempt to relieve the South Africans in Delville Wood. During this attack the battalion won two VCs but ended up being shot up in a 'blue on blue' with 10th Battalion Essex Regiment. The war diary does not record any dead for 27/7/16- in fact on 27th 10th RWF was recuperating behind the lines at Bois-De-Tailles. If he had died of wounds on that date he is more likely to have a known grave than end up recorded on Thiepval memorial. The date of death therefore seems to be a mistake in CWGC records. Send me a PM with your address and I will post relevant pages of the War Diary to you.
