Soren Posted 21 July , 2009 Share Posted 21 July , 2009 Today is the National Day of Belgium! I'd just like to say hello and thank you to all our Belgian friends that have so warmly welcomed us over the year and to wish them well for the year ahead! It is a fantastic country and I am very honoured to live amongst you all! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgium
Aurel Sercu Posted 21 July , 2009 Share Posted 21 July , 2009 Thanks, Soren. Actually I feel more Flemish than Belgian, but I'm glad to make an exception for today. Aurel

Aurel Sercu Posted 21 July , 2009 Share Posted 21 July , 2009 Steve, Yes, there is. but you are 10 days late to congratulate me. :-) 11 July. (Remembering and referring to a historical event, in 1302, when a Flemish "army" of mostly commoners and farmers defeated the elite and cavalry of Philip the Fair’s army near Kortrijk (Courtrai) in the "Guldensporenslag" (the Battle of the Golden Spurs).) stevem49 Posted 21 July , 2009 Share Posted 21 July , 2009 Belated Happy Flemish day then Thanks for the info. Most years we holiday on the Flemish coast at this time and did not realise there was a Flemish day. Although we did spend an excellent day in Nieupoort two years ago celebrating something - Lots of huge puppets? Cheers Steve

Aurel Sercu Posted 21 July , 2009 Share Posted 21 July , 2009 Thanks, Bruce. And Steve. And by the way ... "in Nieupoort two years ago celebrating something - Lots of huge puppets?" Well, after a certain number of Duvels, some people here see tiny insects. Others see .... Aurel
Chris_Baker Posted 21 July , 2009 Share Posted 21 July , 2009 You just have to see the Garnaalstoet in Oostduinkerke to begin to question your sanity. Man-sized (and bigger) shrimps walking down the street. Brilliant.

Aurel Sercu Posted 21 July , 2009 Share Posted 21 July , 2009 This is amazing ! Steve has photographable hallucinations ! And the second pic is fake. Photoshop has a special subprogramme "Change my Duvel into coffee". Chris, You were in Oostduinkerke ? I had always thought I was the only one on the Forum that had seen the Garnaalstoet ! (I used to live in Oostduinkerke. And as Forum-member Bill knows, my wife is from there. And even went in the Parade ! But that was before my time. Fortunately. The idea of being married to a Giant Shrimp ... :-) Aurel (Flemish and Belgian. Today however a little Belgian / Flemish) :-) P.S. Steve, De Reuzenstoet in Nieuwpoort, if I am correct is every second year. Last time July 12, 2009. Two years before you will have your next Duvel ... That's a long time ... :-(
stevem49 Posted 21 July , 2009 Share Posted 21 July , 2009 Sadly we have to attend a family wedding in Turkey this year so missed the festival and my coffee I have also seen the giant shrimps and nearly fell off me bike. I thought it must have been the coffee
Bill Rogers Posted 21 July , 2009 Share Posted 21 July , 2009 Aurel, why didn't you tell your "relatives" about Flemish day! Not that we could have treated you to a Duvel, but I know someone who will definately have one now that she knows Bill

Aurel Sercu Posted 21 July , 2009 Share Posted 21 July , 2009 Bill, Great to here someone in Maryland tonight will drink a Duvel ! Steve, And as I have no experience ... I haven't the foggiest idea when Hommelbier drinkers start seeing puppets. Back to the Tour de France now. About to arrive. Aurel
