Landsturm Posted 15 April , 2004 Share Posted 15 April , 2004 I have a account by author John Williams on situation in French army 1917. In it is a mention that during the opening moves of Nivelle`s ill-fated offensive in April. French artillery (by accident) shot their own Senegalese troops. Unfortunately this is the only account I have found on this incident. Any further information? According to Internet, there were two Senegalese regiments in Chemin-de-Dames on 16 April 1917, 27th in Plateau de Bovette and 62nd in l'Ailette. Robert Dunlop Posted 16 April , 2004 Share Posted 16 April , 2004 The only source book that I have is 'Memoirs of the Maelstrom: A Senegalese Oral History of the First World War' by Joe Lunn (ISBN 0 85255 638 1). It features interviews with Sengalese soldiers and relatives. He points out the the percentage casualty rate generally increased for the non-White soldiers after 1916, while that of the White soldiers decreased. They were used as assault troops in the offensive but there are no details of the units that you mention. Robert
