Guest biffobollox Posted 15 April , 2004 Share Posted 15 April , 2004 Briefly I had paid a resercher to search the PRO regarding my grandfathers service in the first war details below:- Searched all the surviving service records and regret to advise there are no files for Elliott. Film references are - burned series, WO363/B1797 - unburned series, WO364/133, 4913, 5024, and 5803. Elliott's (army records show double t) service medal index card shows entitlement to the British War and Victory Medals, with service number 306073 in the West Riding Regiment, but they also show service after that in the Royal Defence Corps - re-numbered 81808. This means that the medals were actually issued under RDC authorisation, which is the mitigating news - the RDC administration was done from the London Infantry Record Office which was the best of the lot for giving precise information. In Elliott's case it shows all overseas service as being with the 7th Battalion West Riding Regiment from 16/1/1917 till 11/3/1918. This is the first overseas date for the 2/7th Battalion, and there is no sign of any transfers. I have also visited the DWR archive and read the battalion diary, very little persinal info. Has anybody got any other ideas on further research that could establish what my grandfather did in the first war or indeed info on the 2/7th DWR in general ? Chris_Baker Posted 15 April , 2004 Share Posted 15 April , 2004 Ian, take a look at this page, which gives a potted history of all battalions of the DWR, then this one, which is a history of the 62nd Division of which 2/7th was a part.
