hi - i am trying to trace my grandfather WILLIAM BYFORD

the only details i have is a certificate from SOUTHWICK PATRIOTIC FUND PRESENTED TO HIM TO COMMEMORATE HIS SERVICES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919

SAYS PRESENTED TO W.BYFORD 1/4 YORK & LANCASTER RGMT

I ASSUME HE WOULD HAVE BEEN PART OF THE ROYAL SUSSEX???

I ALSO HAVE A PHOTO OF THE REGIMENT?

CAPT WAS E.BRUCE-HAY

CSM G.BALL

SGT T BELL

SGT W.J BENNETT

PLUS OTHER LCE CORPRALS

CAN ANYONE HELP

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

The best advice I can give is suggest you click on the link to the Long Long Trail (top left of this page) and then find the section "grandad's war". This will tell you what it may be possible to find out.

One of things it will mention is a Medal Index Card. These are held at the National archives in London and list the entitlement to medals that each soldier had. Those for the letter B are now available on-line.

There are. probably, three reasons why your grandfather might have been in the Yorks & Lancs. First, he might have been living or working in their recruitment area if he enlisted early in the war. Second, he may have originally joined another regiment and subsequently been transferred. Third, assuming he joined later in the war, he would have simply been allocated to whichever unit was most in need of men at the time.
