Remembered Today:

12th Field Company Engineers, AIF

I am trying to obtain information on this Coy during the period July- December 1916 (in particular 3118 Driver Verner Eldred Smithwick, killed 7 December 1916). If it is in Bean's vol III I am unable to locate it. The usual AWM personal records have been accessed.

I think the 12th Field Coy Engineers were attached to the 4th Australian Division AIF. I'm afraid my general lack of knowledge is getting in the way of things.

Would anyone be able to give me some advice on this lot?

1. the organisational structure of the engineers in general and where a coy would fall into the scheme of things

2. the relationship between the engineers and the infantry

3. the difference, if any, between engineers and pioneers

Thank you,

Michael
