asdarley Posted 11 July , 2009 Share Posted 11 July , 2009 I have just been given this flying helmet. Does the RFC stamp mean what I think it does?
Krithia Posted 11 July , 2009 Share Posted 11 July , 2009 Can you post a photo of the helmet from the outside, this will help. The stamping looks period.

Starlight Posted 11 July , 2009 Share Posted 11 July , 2009 I also meant to ask what would the BTD stand for? Could be Balloon Training Depot Steve
scottmarchand Posted 12 July , 2009 Share Posted 12 July , 2009 That is a very nice 1917-18 era War Department issued Mk I flying helmet, I'd be very pleased to have one like it in my collection.
David B Posted 12 July , 2009 Share Posted 12 July , 2009 Noted the name stencilled on the helmet as A D Staite and this is probably his medal card
asdarley Posted 12 July , 2009 Author Share Posted 12 July , 2009 Thanks for the medal card ... I think it is my man. Also I think Balloon and Kite may be right. I have also got a pile of papers with detailed drawings of balloon tethering/instruments etc. Also several exam papers asking questions on balloons and aerial observation for artillery. I only received his box of goodies yesterday so am still picking through it. Will scan and put on the forum if anyone would be interested
PhilB Posted 12 July , 2009 Share Posted 12 July , 2009 Nice double arrow stamp showing discharge from service?
Krithia Posted 12 July , 2009 Share Posted 12 July , 2009 A very nice helmet, and a late starter, does that read he entered service in 1922? I used to have this pattern helmet, unfortunately sold it a few years back, wished I kept it. Thanks for posting these pics.
asdarley Posted 13 July , 2009 Author Share Posted 13 July , 2009 Not quite sure of his post war service but I know he pestered the War Department on outbreak of WW2 and ended up in the Royal Navy looking after barrage balloons. So he served in both wars and appears also to have served in all three services!
