206thCEF Posted 6 July , 2009 Share Posted 6 July , 2009 Hello all. I thought these two photographs might interest some members. They show the "after the battle" results of, what I think, was a massive period bombardment and what was left of the trees. Cheers Joe. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...2C_Stellung.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...ssener_Wald.jpg
laughton Posted 7 July , 2009 Share Posted 7 July , 2009 Excuse my ignorance, but was that where the great US movie told of: The Lost Battalion Looks like that my supposition was correct from that link A great movie, not sure how factual it was but one of my favourites! bob lembke Posted 7 July , 2009 Share Posted 7 July , 2009 In the Argonne fighting, the German General von Mudra, a leading Pionier officer, developed new concepts of combined arms warfare, utilizing infantry, artillery, mortars, combat engineers, mine warfare, and flamethrowers, and pushed the French thru the forest nearly from one end to another. But even I am surprised by the devastation. In the events surrounding "The Lost Battlion", I believe that they were "lost" in dense woods that had not been chopped up like in the pictures posted.
