Opening of the Menin Gate Memorial

Hi pals

Recently a large collection of photographs has come into my possession of a pilgrimmage to the Battlefields in 1928, no doubt by families in this area - Buxton, Derbyshire. They include visits to Ypres and Vimy.

Among them are newspaper cutting of the Dedication of the Menin Gate which might be of interest to Forum pals.

After some limitted success with the scanner (the originals are full page!) here are my first 2 efforts, which appear to be from the Daily Mirror, August 9th 1928 ....

Do let me know if you want me to post some more scans.

Graham

Graham, I'd be very interested to see any 1928 battlefield-visiting views. Incidentally, the Menin Gate was inaugurated on Sunday, 24th July, 1927.

Graham.

Great to see these clippings. Like Tom I'd be interested to see any photos of the battlefield tour.

Many thanks

I'll be posting some of the photographs in the next day or too when I have been able to scan them - but apparently I have to spend some time in the garden today!! <_<

Graham,

I have the book subsequently issued about the tour by the Legion and the handbook that was issued to the pilgrims together with some pics, a tour badge, ephemera and a diary.

Do any of your Vimy pics show the memorial in construction with the plinth only in place?

Most interested to see more pics as many other are here.

Regards Ian

Thanks for sharing these photographs GrahamC.

I'm very surprised you need to ask if we wanted to see them.

Thanks again

Hi Martin (and others)

I was sure you would want to see them - but I have 2 albums full, so I'll post a few at a time until someone tells me to stop!!

The Legion guy who gave the albums to me lost his uncle in the War and his father went on the pilgrimmage and bought back the photos (postcards actually) and some are similar to those posted above. There are some more personal ones of groups and lads outside a bar - with pints, of course!

Watch this space ..

Here's some more photos from the Daily Mail, 7 August 1928:

1. Headed: "Back to Vimy" - The caption reads: "One of the most interesting features of yesterday's British pilgrimmage to the battlefields of Northern France was the visit to the Vimy Ridge trenches which have been carefully preserved. A party going through the trenches."

.. contd ..

Absolutely brilliant pictures "Pals", you will have to treasure them.

I have a cutting with the details of the service, times of broadcast on the radio, hymns etc.. which was in amongst cuttings from my Gt Grandmother.

Amazing what some people have kept.
