mrmcwhinnie Posted 29 June , 2009 Share Posted 29 June , 2009 Assistance please! I have trawled throughout this weekend looking for an example of the Cap Badge worn by members of the Royal Marines Medical Unit to no avail. Can anybody be of assistance, did the unit have its own badge?
michaeldr Posted 29 June , 2009 Share Posted 29 June , 2009 Cap Badge worn by members of the Royal Marines Medical Unit I suppose it may depend upon whom within the 'Medical Unit' you are looking for, but my impression is that as far as the stretcher bearers and medical orderlies are concerned they wore the usual RM cap badge; See post #13 in this old thread for a photograph of The RM Band/stretcher-bearers and medical orderlies after Gallipoli Here http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...mp;hl=Faithfull
horatio2 Posted 29 June , 2009 Share Posted 29 June , 2009 I agree with michaeldr - the RMMU wore the RMLI cap badge.
findabetterole Posted 29 June , 2009 Share Posted 29 June , 2009 I agree with michaeldr - the RMMU wore the RMLI cap badge. Todays RM Medics are RN badged, but as has has been mentioned, WW1 RM Medics were either regimental and wore the RMLI cap badge, or were RAMC as for the Army. John Morcombe Posted 30 June , 2009 Share Posted 30 June , 2009 RMMU did not use the RMLI cap badge, they appear to have the globe & laurel collar type, without the light infantry bugle.
mrmcwhinnie Posted 30 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 30 June , 2009 Thank you for the assistance gentlemen. I tend to get somewhat carried away when I am on a search and got into trouble for burning the midnight oil again!! However, this time it may have paid off. John, would this be of the type you pointed out?
horatio2 Posted 30 June , 2009 Share Posted 30 June , 2009 As usual JM is spot on. I have just found a picture which appears to show the bugle was not present, although it is hard to tell. A good lesson - never jump to conclusions!
John Morcombe Posted 1 July , 2009 Share Posted 1 July , 2009 That lovely photo which Michael has linked in his post (above) shows the type of cap badge very well.
mrmcwhinnie Posted 1 July , 2009 Author Share Posted 1 July , 2009 Thank you all for your input. I wasn't 100% with the headstone I took the first image from although it did say the man was RMMU. Wanted to confirm through the 'Knowledge' before commiting and without the description on the stone as a guide. I suppose the next question would be, are these badges readily available or are they of the rare variety seeing as the numbers of the unit in comparison to most were small. Once again thanks to all. findabetterole Posted 1 July , 2009 Share Posted 1 July , 2009 Mal.... the badge in question... shown on the headstone... is not a cap badge, but the standard 'collar dog' of the RM's. Todays examples are of anodised aluminium (gold coloured plasticy looking), or blackened brass (subdjued). The WW1 or WW2 versions (both identicle) can easily be found and quite common. The easiest place to find them is on ebay. Type the search parameter as 'Royal Marines', and watch the pages unfold. You can narrow your search with either... 'Badges', 'Collar Dogs' or 'Cap Badges'. mrmcwhinnie Posted 13 July , 2009 Author Share Posted 13 July , 2009 Further to my quest could this be the type of Badge worn by the RMMU during the first war?
