Since june 2009 we have started a research project on Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. It is our intention to set up a personal database of the 10 754 soldiers, buried on this cemetery (situated in Poperinge, Belgium, see CWGC-site). If you have photographs, letters, a diary of your relative buried on Lijssenthoek, please let us know. We will treat this information with respect.

This project is financed by the Town of Poperinge, the Flemish Government. The CWGC, In Flanders Fields and Talbot House are partners in this project.

On the website www.talbothouse.be ('research' topic) you may find registration files.

I am researching my great uncle, Pte George Bertie Goof, I think you posted a message on one of my threads. When I have more information I would be honoured to pass it on.

Many Thanks for your hard work

Hello,

I've been meaning for a while to ask a question about this cemetry, and perhaps this is the best place.

In the Michelin guide to Ypres and the Battlefields, p. 115 it says" At the crossing of the road from Poperinghe to Boeschepe, turn left to visit the largest cemetary in this region..... which contains 20,000 to 22,000 graves".

I assume this refers to Lijssenthoek, and my question is of course, where have the other 10-12 000 graves gone?

Hugh.

Our 1914 school captain, John Hartington MC, is buried at Lijssenthoek, virtually next to the Cross of Sacrifice. His photograph and story used to be on the 'Ordinary Heroes' area of the 'Long, Long Trail' website, but Chris seems to have removed this section recently. I shall send you his details. Incidentally, my wife is a proud member of the Talbot House piano club!

PS I can't seem to find a link to the registration files on the website.

I assume that the Michelin-reporter was impressed by the view of the cemetery and that he made a wild guess. The first published CWGC-register dates from 1923 and gives exact numbers. The Michelin guide dates from 1919... I wonder whether this quote still stands in the reprint (2002).
