PhilH Posted 1 November , 2002 Share Posted 1 November , 2002 I am trying to find out if a photo of my grandfather might indicate what job he did during part of the 1914-1918 war. The picture shows him siting in front row of a group of soldiers near a board marked HQ details, 1/6 Gloucester battalion, 15 September 1916. He is wearing an armband on his left arm. It appears to be all one colour - except that there is a thin, possibly white horizontal band in the middle of the armband. Several other men have similar armbands. Any forum members have any ideas? I wasn't sure how to post the picture on the forum although I do have it in electronic form.
Terry Carter Posted 1 November , 2002 Share Posted 1 November , 2002 Hi there, Accordong to the book "Brassey's History of Uniforms : World War One British Army" compiled by Steven Bull, a red, white, red arm band worn on the right arm indicates men attached to Army Corps HQ. This would appear as grey.white, grey in a black and white photo. Divisional HQ troops wore a red arm band while Brigade HQ wore a blue arm bands. It does not state whether there was an arm band for Battalion HQ's. Regards Terry
PhilH Posted 2 November , 2002 Author Share Posted 2 November , 2002 Thanks Terry, It sounds from your reply like it may be some sort of generic armband for HQ troops. It does appear as grey/white/grey in the photo. Regards Phil
