kevinrolfe Posted 26 June , 2009 Share Posted 26 June , 2009 Hi, my aunt has sent me an old family photo which is undated. one chap in the photo has a set of medals. but i cannot place them. its not a very good photo. Any ideas? the chap could be Albert Selby Born 1865 listed as Private Soldiers Infantry on 1901 Census. but we are un sure as the photo has George Biggs written on the back and there where two, father and son so there is a chance it could be George Biggs jnr who was in WWI at this time we have no idea. HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 26 June , 2009 Share Posted 26 June , 2009 They could be Temperance as stated or Regimental Shooting etc;Medals;the Photo has a very Victorian "feel" to it
Droocoo Posted 27 June , 2009 Share Posted 27 June , 2009 unofficial medals, probably for shooting, temperance etc Are you sure this man was in the military?
Archer Posted 28 June , 2009 Share Posted 28 June , 2009 Are you sure he's an Englishman ... could he be wearing an American uniform? It almost looks as if two of the medals are suspended from eagles with outstretched wings ?
auchonvillerssomme Posted 28 June , 2009 Share Posted 28 June , 2009 Those aren't wings, they represent moustaches. In Victorian England there were many moustache societies, all awarding there own medals but with one thing in common they had the moustache hanger attached to the ribbon. per ardua per mare per terram Posted 29 June , 2009 Share Posted 29 June , 2009 No wonder there were so many fine tashes!
kevinrolfe Posted 29 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 29 June , 2009 He is English. he is either one of two people George Biggs or Albert Selby. George left his family and buggerd of to Canada and set up a new family there Albert brought up George's daughter, so on the balance of probability its Albert. Archer Posted 30 June , 2009 Share Posted 30 June , 2009 moustaches You're kidding, right???!!!! I thought they looked as if they were inspired by this kind of thing ...
findabetterole Posted 1 July , 2009 Share Posted 1 July , 2009 OK.. I don't think we are dealing with the correct period here. The two medals with what looks to be out-spread wings at the top, are near identicle to US AOP medals = ACW Army of the Potomac Veterans Association, or GAR Medals. The hangers for the two round medas are similar of the heavy type used by these associations. Seph
Archer Posted 1 July , 2009 Share Posted 1 July , 2009 Ah ... well done, Seph! ... this is the kind of thing I had at the back of my mind. Interested forumites can check out this page Agreed ... these medals have nowt to do with the Great War.
auchonvillerssomme Posted 1 July , 2009 Share Posted 1 July , 2009 You're kidding, right???!!!! You just never know with us English do you???!!!! I don't think they are Masonic, the hangers seem a bit large and I'm not sure he would be wearing such a large group of temperance medals in a family group. Although there are 2 medals looking the same shape but different coloured metals which would indicate their were different degrees or grades or issued for lengthening service. He also seems to be wearing something on his collar. Mick
