zippy.72 Posted 25 June , 2009 Share Posted 25 June , 2009 Was there today and very impressed with the memorials to workers from the various foundries. Well worth a look if you are in the area. http://newkelham.blogspot.com/2009/04/war-...on-display.html
deano Posted 25 June , 2009 Share Posted 25 June , 2009 Thanks for the 'heads up' Zippy, i'll be there tomorrow! I have transcribed over 160 'Rolls' from Sheffield, some 22,000 names. The large Roll looks like the Thos. W. Ward one, the Hadfields one i've seen before but the two small ones either side of Hadfields are new to me i think. thanks again, Dean. There is also a large 'paper' one that is very unusual.
jay dubaya Posted 25 June , 2009 Share Posted 25 June , 2009 Is the large paper one not Cammell Lairds (Cyclops Works) I have the names transcribed from this and also William Tyzacks which is part of the collection at Kelham. It's nice to see them all on display with no lasting damage from the flood. I'll have to pay a visit next time I pop home to see mi mam. Dean, if you pop down there could you let me know just how many are in the collection, looks like they've aquired a few more since last time I spoke to them, cheers, Jon
deano Posted 26 June , 2009 Share Posted 26 June , 2009 Hi Jon, they have quite a few, but some are 'lost' !! Off the top of my head they have - Arthur Balfour & Co - in the store. Cammell Laird - damaged in the flood, but seems to be back now. Tommy Wards - I have a few images of this one, there is also a book full of photographs of the men on it in Sheffield Local Studies library. Atlas works - 'lost', but there is a list of names and pic on the 'Roll of Honour' website. Samuel Osborns - There is also a 'served' roll, this is a paper one with original cap badges above the mens names, this is in the store, i now think the small rolls at the side of the Hadfields one in Zippys link are the Sam Osborn one. I 'found' this one on a rummage through the store a couple of years ago. Hadfields - in the store. William Hutton & Sons - 'lost', UKNIWM has an image, as do i. Cornish Works - was 'lost', i 'found' it after a rumage through the stores a couple of years ago. Tyzacks - After the damage caused in the flood, i saw it in pieces in the store, on the reverse there is another Roll, actually its just the Great War Roll, they have obviously reversed it to include the WW2 names. Wire Drawers Society - UKNIWM has an image of this one, but it is 'lost' at the moment. Sheffield Daily Telegraph - this one is in two bits on a pallett in the store, but i do have a good image of all the names. Jon, there are more but i cant think what they are at the mo. The last incumbent that kept records of what they have apparently didn't keep very good records!! The new incumbent is very good, but she keeps having babies and is never there! All the above Rolls i have images of and i will gladly do any look ups from the 160+ Rolls i have transcribed. One more point, after about 5 years of searching i have managed to find the Roll of Honour for the Wharncliife War Hospital here in Sheffield! I know who has it and where it is, but it is at the mo off limits! This was a huge Roll, 20' by 10' apparently, made out of Oak. Watch this space. regards Dean. zippy.72 Posted 26 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 26 June , 2009 Great work and well done! Reminds me of some memorials from Lincoln County Hospital that were 'lost' only to be found in a shed!!
