Ann Yarwood Posted 25 June , 2009 Share Posted 25 June , 2009 Hey everyone, I've finally recieved my great uncle's service history from New Zealand which, needless to say, is about as clear as a greater London Bus timetable, so no doubt I'll be here for much of the rest of the week, bothering you all to try and figure it all out. From what I can figure out so far, it seems uncle Walter (Carrick, who was born in Liverpool, but emigrated to NZ and signed up to the NZEF over there) started out with the 28th reinforcements, No. 2 NZ (Area ) A Employ Company, in March 1917, and was shipped out of NZ via the Waitemata (14/7/1917) and somewhere along the way switched to the Norman in August/September of that year before landing in Plymouth on 21st Sept. He then spent a couple of months training in Codford and Sling. There isn't much information (well, none obvious to me anyway) about his whereabouts after that other than that he was then shipped to Etaples to 'attached strength' (?) (5/11/17) and at one point he was in (Limi?) Rouen (at the end of Nov 1917) and what looks like he 'marched to Dion'??? (28/11/17). As you might expect re his activities, it simply says 'field' in many of the boxes, which I'm confident you guys will be able to fill in for me. Is that enough info to go on? Really appreciate any info you can give about the situation in France at the time, where he may have been headed, what may have befallen many of his comrades. (He survived the war, but not sure he was healthy following it. But will get to that in another post. Regards, Ann
JoMH Posted 25 June , 2009 Share Posted 25 June , 2009 Hello Ann, Walter Carrick's file is now digitised on Archway and is available as a pdf. I think Archives NZ is digitising war files as they are ordered. This may help others (those more knowledgeable) to help you with your questions. Good luck! JoMH Posted 25 June , 2009 Share Posted 25 June , 2009 Yes, it was a long, long wait for my grandfather's file... and his is now digitised too. It seems that as they are ordered, they are digitised. As I say though, this may make it easier for others to help, and saves scanning them to post on GWF! Joanna
Ann Yarwood Posted 25 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 25 June , 2009 Makes it easier for family to view too - been trying to send file to them all morning, but not happening! They can go and download a copy themselves now and see what a drunken lush he was
