Guest helenmars Posted 11 April , 2004 Share Posted 11 April , 2004 The last time I posted this question on the forum I didn't phrase it very well, so I thought I'd try again! Can anyone tell me, of the men who served in the British Armed Forces in WW1, how many are still living and what are their names and histories. Thank you. Paul Reed Posted 11 April , 2004 Share Posted 11 April , 2004 I believe there are only about 20/30 left; no doubt someone will know all their names. Most served only in the final phase of the war, although there is one 1914 Star man alive - the last of the Old Contemptibles.

ypresman Posted 12 April , 2004 Share Posted 12 April , 2004 Albert 'Smiler' Marshall joined in Christmas 1914, took part in a Calvary charge, was wounded, joined the MCG, and was taken prisoner, only to be immediately released, as the 'Bosche' couldn't afford to keep him!! Quite a remarkable chap!! Back in 1998, we had more than 300 chaps, in 2002 we had 43,last year we had 27,now all we have is 25, as James Lovell died in January of this year, just before his 105th Birthday..... VivP Posted 1 June , 2004 Share Posted 1 June , 2004 Hello everyone There was an obituary in The Times recently for RN Serviceman Henry St John Fancourt, 103, of Lymington, Hants. Another grand old man has gone. Viv trying to find which regiment my uncle Otto joined in 1914. He was from Bath, but had been teaching German 1912-1914 at King Edward VI School, Camp Hill, Birmingham.
