Remembered Today:

Civilian medals and recognition

Did the police, firemen, air raid wardens etc ever get any recognition for their hazardous duty during air raids over London

during WW1. I am thinking of maybe medals i.e. did they qualify for the BWM or was there a special gong given to them

who nightly risked their lives during these raids

There were no "Civilian" Campaign Medals save for the BWM & Mercantile Marine War Medal to men & women of that Service,if they duly qualified.

King George V however was deeply impressed by the work of the Special Constabulary & the SCSM with Clasp "Great War 1914~1918" was instituted @ his behest.

The London Telephone Service Operators had a Badge comprising a gilt crowned blue enamelled Riband with LTS in the centre & IIRC "Air Raids" & "Ducit Amor Patriae" in honour of their gallantry in "manning" [shouldn't that be "womanning"] the London Telephone Exchange during Gotha & Zeppelin Raids, there was no official equivelant to the WW2 Defence Medal for the Great War.though many Civilians {Male & Female} were awarded AM;MBE;OBE;& medal of the MEOBE;etc;or unofficial awards; for Home Defence Services..

How about "Operating". :D Its a pity though they could have been killed or injured in action by the enemy as well.

Captain Joe Buckle of the Chippenham Fire Brigade (Wiltshire) was awarded the Red Cross War Medal.
