My wife and myself will be taking over as Wardens from 29th June to 19th July 2010 at Toc H Poperinghe, I hope that any Pals in the area will pop in for a cuppa and a chat. Looking forward to meeting Simon Jones and party.

I so wish I was able to pop in, but no such luck.

I do, however, want to wish you well in your tenure as wardens, I'm sure you'll do a grand job and I hope you have many visitors.

John.

Savour every moment, although it is "work" it will pass very quickly.

I have visited the house on many occasions and always feel that it is a very special place.

Regards

John

I am bringing a group to Ypres 7-11 July. There is a 'free day' on 8 July, so I am hoping that some at least will make their way to see you. Best wishes for your time there.

We hope to visit Ypres around the 4th July (the date in 1917 when my grandfather, who was with the 1/17th London was killed). If we get the opportunity to visit Poperinghe and can find somewhere to park! we will certainly call in to see you

Hello John

If it was yourself that we saw at the end of june, thanks for the scones and the tea and mostly for your welcome, finished our holiday off a treat.

For those who have difficulty in parking in Poperinge please find attached map. Do not under any circumstance park in front of a garage €50.00 fine and the likelyhood of being towed away.

Why is it not possible to get coffee in Talbot House?

I can't stand tea (despite being British!) so end up with tap water............

Tea and Cocoa was only served at Talbot House during the War. Enter into the spirit please. You are lucky to have a choice today.

I hadn't realsed the significance of the lack of coffee. Now I unerstand.

I'll just have to develop a taste for cocoa!

Thanks

Hi All

Jackie and myself are back in Talbot House again this year as Wardens from 28th June to 19th July, so if any Pals are in the Ieper area don't forget to pop in and view the excellent Museum and also have a cup tea also a chat and maybe a fresh baked scone.

John - something I have always wanted to do - my GF visited Pop for supplies when based in Esqelbec.

I still think the roof chapel is the most holy place I have ever visited - extraordinary.

Visited in April this year and what a surprise. Great museum but the house is something else and when you get up to the little chapel! A must place to visit. Cant remember the name of the British chap who served us with tea but what a nice gent he was, we got mini easter eggs with it as well. Hope your tea is up to his standard!

During my last tenure in 2009, I had no complaints about the tea.

Yes, there last week with my wife: great tea, and that with a horde of large teenagers lurking.

I do have a question, which is in no way a complaint.

My wife and I pay our dues each year to have Family membership of Friends of ......

As a matter of undisputed fact we have 4 children. These, I trust, are part of our family, so we might reasonably expect to be admitted, six of us, without charge.

However, last week we were with my wife's sister, and said wife's sister's husband.

The lady at the desk bridled at admitting the four of us, but was decent enough to be persuaded [which resulted in decent donations and a lot of shop purchases].

So, the question:

what constitutes a family please?

[i only ask because this thread exists, and would not bother Friends of ....... otherwise, as the matter is not in the forefront of my thoughts.

It would be nice to know, though ...........

We look forward to catching up in the next fornight John. It was interesting to read about the reasons for tea and cocoa being served rather than coffee. I heard my husband telling someone this over lunch yesterday and thought (once again) how much I learn from the Forum. We were there a couple of months ago on a quick visit (and didn't have time to stop for tea) but very much looking forward to coming back

cheers

Something that may be of interest to some - when we were last there there a couple of months ago, there was an entrance fee of (I think) about 6 euros to the museum. There was a reduction for those "d'un certain age". We have found such a reduction to be quite common around Europe and showing an EU passport is usually the way in. (My husband's Aussie passport has been refused in the past for a reduction, but now he has a British one as well)

When we showed our passports (details page open) for a senior ticket to the museum it was waved away, with no, no we cannot look at your passport, it is against the law and we just take your word for it.

cheers

Many thanks for the tip John, will do that this time. Not that they questioned me...guess the 'certain age' is evident!
