From the NA website......

Description Medal card of Clarke, Lester S

Corps Regiment No Rank

Leicestershire Regiment 11998 Lance Corporal

Royal Engineers 244770 Lance Corporal

Date 1914-1920

Catalogue reference WO 372/4

So he was 11998 with the Leicestershire Regiment before a transfer to the Royal Engineers as 244770.

Steve

Checking a bit further Lester Sydney Clarke has some Service records available via Ancestry, if you can send me an email address I'll download them and send them on.

Nice one Steve

the date of entry is consistent with the 6th (Service) Bn formed in Leicester in August 1914 as part of K1 (Kitchener's first 100,000 volunteers)

I am indebted to you all for those rapid and helpful responses!

My neighbour-his daughter will be delighted-overwhelmed?

She is last of the direct family-no children herself, and she is only child.

She gave me some of here farthers cartoons that he drew in the front....very good imagery.

We live near Kew so i will 'push' her to go to Kew.

many thanks again
