Remembered Today:

Casualty from Poplar

Hi,

I am hoping to visit East London next Friday to photograph the house of a casualty I have the plaque and BWM to, in Poplar.

My question is, what war memorial in he likely to be named on? Is there one in Poplar? If so, would anybody like any pictures of it?

Hi Steve, What Regiment did he serve with? Im not sure if there is a memorial in Poplar. Allthough not advertised i found a great 1 in Victoria park Hackney. Had a few of the 10th London Regiment lads on it including 2 brothers i was researching. Might be worth ringing the Council if no one here knows.

There's a memorial in St Leonards Street "To the memory of the men of the NE Ward of this Borough who fell in the Great War 1914-1919" but it doesn't have any names

Hi James,

He was Mercantile Marine.

Thanks for the link Jay, no luck I'm afraid.

Will go on Friday, even if I just have a wander about.

Cheers

Spent a hot and sweaty day in East London, visiting 4 addresses to men whose plaques I've got in my collection.

All the streets still existed as such, but two comprised solely of modern flats, presumably the street was blitzed. But I managed to find the other two.

The last address was for the Poplar casualty, in Brabazon Street, but that was one of the modern streets. I did however find a lovely war memorial near Langdon Park Docklands Light Railway station, only a hundred yeards or so from Brabazon Street. Lots of names on it, but not the one I was looking for. Also spotted an old church near the street which I hoped may have had some kind of memorial, but it was derelict and boarded up, so wasn't able to investigate.

My next day out is to visit relevant addresses in South London, but that's another story.

There is a war memorial in the Tower Hamlets Cemetry near Mile End tube station. It is near the NE entrance on Southern Grove.
