The uniform is that of the Royal Naval Air Service. Perhaps the photograph date is incorrect.

The same photo appears in Henry's Wikipedia entry with the more-plausible caption "Allingham in RNAS uniform in 1916".

Has anyone else noticed that Henry is now the WORLD'S oldest man as the guy in Japan who was 252 days older has just died.

I take it the RNAS dressed more like soldiers than sailors then?

They were issued with a variety of uniforms depending on what was available and the theatre that they were in. The range included naval tropical whites as well as khaki. I expect that puttees would be more practical in a plane than bell bottoms!
