Hi everyone

Great news for researchers! Archway New Zealand is now showing against soldier's name the message "view digitised record PDF" and you click on it and up comes the record! They have only completed, however, about 800 files - but it's a start! Ye ha!!

Try it out for yourself: http://archway.archives.govt.nz/ and type in a soldier's name - if you are lucky up will come their PDF file.

Hello Zack !

Thank you for posting this FANTASTIC news on the Forum. It is indeed a boon to those researchers interested in personnel of the NZEF and who cannot visit New Zealand to view the records.

Regards

Wayne

WOW! That's absolutely fabulous news, Zack!

Interestingly (to me, anyway), the only John Mackenzie to so far be digitalised is my Uncle Jock. No casualty form nor attestation, but I remember those were held separately for some reason, in Jock's case.

...............

If you type in "WW1 digitised" in the search box, you get a list of the 914 names already done, in alphabetical order.

There's a couple of Rarotangans amongst them, Christine (surnames beginning with P). I've not seen a form in...well, I'm guessing it's Rarotongan... before. No idea what form it is!

etc

Any idea what it is? (Cause, you know, Rarotongan ends with 'Tongan' and you're the closest expert to ask ;) )

A Niue Islander as well, also under 'P'. But I'm guessing you've already looked at them.

Yes. And a couple of Fiji men. I spoke to my friend who has been calling up all the Pac Is files, and many of the digitised files are the ones he has been looking at. As files get called up, they digitise them. Pity they weren't doing it when Zac was checking all the Malta files, but maybe they were and his ones could appear soon!!

I think the form is an attestation form, agreeing to serve in the army.

I have a further 30 odd Pacific Islander files on order. Once this is complete I will have finished the data base of approx 1,200 Pacific Islanders from the Cook Island, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Ocean Island, Gilbert and Ellis and Norfolk Islands. It covers both local and expat individuals who served in the New Zealand Army in WW1. Five years of research. Next phase is the Campaign histories which is about a third done.

Cheers,

Neesoon

Hi Zack, thanks for posting that information. After all that work, 'Harold Piffard' is one of the names that can be downloaded! Anyway, thank you again for your patience and reply's while I was researching Harold. Thanks, Craig...

Great stuff.

I randomly selected a man using 'WW1 digitised' (Johnston, Allan Murray) and couldn't believe the amount of info. Must be every piece of paper generated during his service in there!

Shows MM (but not citation?), and was from around the corner from my house!

Going to great as they put more on.

Cheers,

Blair

This is outstanding as this could be the kick off for the New Zealand wing of IFCP.

Cheers Andy.
