Remembered Today:

My mystery Grandfather - Liverpool Regiment

I wonder if any Forum member can help me solve a family mystery.

A chance search of BMD registers in Liverpool has provided a name and address of my Grandfather whose details were never known to me and my family.

He is now known to have been Harry Taylor (born c 1888). We also know that in 1915 he was a Private in what the Registrar of Births recorded as "the 8th Irish Kings Liverpool Regiment". When his son was born in that year, his address was 9 Albion Terrace, Low Hill, West Derby, Liverpool.

The problem is that a quick check of MICs on line reveal at least 22 "Harry Taylor" in the Liverpool Regiment in WW1. Can anyone suggest a practical way in which I might track down which of these soldiers might be "my" Harry Taylor?

I've just had a quick look at the MICs and I can see one that may be your Grandfather, Pte 306807 Harry C Taylor. The number was allocated to the 8th Bn during the 1917 TF number changes when service numbers went from 4 to 6 digits, the number block allocated to the 8th Bn was 305001 - 330000. Since no 4 digit number appears on this MIC it would suggest that this Harry Taylor didn't arrive overseas until the number changes had taken place. I'm not sure if an AVL survives for the area but it may well be worth enquiring since these often record unit details including service numbers.

cheers, Jon

Would this then indicate that he was in the 2/8th (Irish) who landed in France in February 1917?

There are no absent voters lists for Liverpool, so do not waste efforts in looking for them.

The 8th Battalion KLR (aka Liverpool Irish) were Territorials.

Possibly 2/8th, but bear in mind that hundreds of men would have been drafted to the 1/8th in 1916 and even more in 1917/18.

Thank you to Jon and all who replied so quickly.

Another relative thinks that he was Harry Cyril Taylor so I may have found my grandfather. :D

Yes Ken, but it was already stated he was a Pte in the 8th (Irish) in 1915, so there were ample opportunities for him to have been drafted into the 1/8th prior to 1917.

My point was that it isn't "highly probable" that he was in the 2/8th, just a possibility. It is equally likely, based upon my research, that he was drafted to 1/8th.

It pays to keep an open mind on these matters until it can be confirmed either way.
