Hi been asked by surviving member of family if any one knows what the DCM and MM were awarded for?

They thought MM was for Somme and DCM for 1917/18 period

Surname: FRENCH

Rank at Award: Company Sergeant Major

Service no at Award: 9207

DCM Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During many enemy attacks in the course of a battle lasting some days, he was constantly visiting all the post, keeping up a good supply of bombs and small arm ammunition, encouraging the men by his cheerful courage and energy, and doing good service everywhere under very heavy artillery and machine-gun fire. When nearly all the warrant and non-commissioned officers had become casualties he helped to reorganise the units, taking his place when necessary in the front firing line. When the order to retire was eventually received he rallied the men and led them into a position to help the troops already occupying the defences.

Awarded: DCM

Previous Awards: MM
