Waddell Posted 14 June , 2009 Share Posted 14 June , 2009 Looking for info on where 11th Argylls were on 20th April 1918 in particular. Does anybody have access to their war diary for this month? Thanks, Scott
Guest Posted 14 June , 2009 Share Posted 14 June , 2009 Hi Scott Early in the morning of April 20, a most successful operation was carried out by the 11th A&SH. Cambrai road. To capture and consolidate the old gun pits. Well worth buying a copy of " The Fifteenth ( Scottish ) Division 1914-1919 " by Lieut-Col J.Stewart, D.S.O. and Johjn Buchan. It gives a good detailed account of this action. I don't have the Bn diary, but there are members who may, or who may copy it for you, for a small fee. Waddell Posted 14 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 14 June , 2009 Thanks Mike, I'll have a look for that book. Any idea of the number of casualties for that day? Scott
Guest Posted 15 June , 2009 Share Posted 15 June , 2009 Hi Scott. This is method I use for finding numbers of casualties on a given day. This fantastic machine. http://www.hut-six.co.uk/cgi-bin/search14-21.php Type in the details as shown, click on search and the number of casualties comes up. If you want to be as accurate as possible, check them all. as some may have died of wounds on that day, but from a different action. Alan Tucker Posted 15 June , 2009 Share Posted 15 June , 2009 Don't forget the diary of Lieutenant Robert Lindsay Mackay which is on the internet
Waddell Posted 15 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 15 June , 2009 Thanks Mike, That search engine is useful. Alan, Thanks for pointing me towards Lieutenant Mackay's diary. It covers the raid well, though I have to say there seems to be a difference between Mackay's light casualties for the day and the CWGC listing of sixteen 11th Battalion men on the search engine.
