Lörscher Posted 5 February , 2015 Share Posted 5 February , 2015 Hello Hugh, I may add an interesting entry from U 91's war diary, regarding the number of casualties: October 5th, 1918 / 2:50 Vm "Abgeblendeter Dampfer in Sicht, Kurs O. Schiffsort durch Peilung kontrolliert, dann Überwassernachtangriff gefahren. Abstand von Land 8 sm.“ October 5th, 1918 / 3:10 Vm „Treffer Vorkante Brücke. Dampfer sinkt sehr schnell. Zur Feststellung des Namens einen Überlebenden aufgenommen. Engl. Dampfer „Heathpark“, 1963 t, Ladung 3500 t Eisenerz von Bilbao nach Liverpool, bewaffnet mit 1 7,6 cm Geschütz. Wrackstelle durch Peilungen nachgeprüft.“ rough translation: 2:50 a.m., steamer without lights, stearing East. Checked position by bearings, than carried out surfaced night attack. Distance from coast 8 miles. 3:10 a.m., hit abreast front edge of the bridge, steamer is sinking very fast. Took one survivor in order to identify the name (of the steamer). English steamer HEATHPARK, 1963 tons, 3500 tons of iron ore from Bilbao to Liverpool, armed with one 7,6 cm gun. Wreckposition verifyed by bearings. Notes from me: Sadly it was very common that those ore ships after being hit were sinking fast, so numbers of survivors most times are limited. The actual position checked by U 91 was 41°26,5'N, 02°18'W, so outside spanish neutral waters. Most important: It's not clear from U 91's war diary what became of this one survivor who was picked up (from a boat?), but he must have been "number 25"!? Usually these men went to the internment camp in Germany, usually Ruhleben near Berlin. As U 91 just returned to Wilhelmshaven on October 26th, just two weeks before the armistice, this mysterious man could have been released very early and so wasn't "in the books"... But that's just an assumption. Kind regards Oliver

MKC Posted 2 November , 2018 Share Posted 2 November , 2018 Heathpark was a collier taken (hired) into military service in June 1918. Lloyd's list her in the 'missing' list on page 311: 1919: Jan 15, Heathpark, M (missing), 2,205 tons, Bilboa Oct 5 1918, [to] Maryport (iron ore) Built 1917, so a reasonably new ship when it went missing after leaving port on 5 October 1918. (It was learned subsequently that it was sunk by U-boat). Mike
