aeroraider Posted 12 June , 2009 Share Posted 12 June , 2009 Attached find two a picture of two tunics that came as a group. One is a summer weight tunic for a Captain tailored in Cairo. The other an English made tunic for a Major. The regiment is the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. There is no name attached to the tunics but I was wondering if it might be able to determine the battalion of possible recipient from the tunics? I am assuming Egypt service (Captain) 1915 or so, and then to Europe and promotion to Major (DSO, MC and C de G) by war's end.
Rob B Posted 12 June , 2009 Share Posted 12 June , 2009 Another possibility is he was a Major post war on demotion from Lt Colonel where he Commanded a battalion in France, this happened to two of my wifes Great Uncles who commanded Battalions on the Western Front only to be demoted after ceasation of hostilities. michaeldr Posted 12 June , 2009 Share Posted 12 June , 2009 The 6th (Service) Battalion The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment were at Gallipoli in 1915 (Alexandria 30th June, sailed for Lemnos 2nd July) and a jacket tailored in Egypt could have made for one of their officers Westlake's 'British Regiments at Gallipoli' gives the following names as members of the original battalion (drafts arrived [eg; in November 1915] but are not named) Captains B W O Thompson, J W Mather, A S Walker, G C Wilson, H Wright, N S Mann, Lieutenants J B Pennyfather, G E Cash, G M Smyth, R M Wilson, J D Crichton, H F A Turner, G B Lockhart, N L Wells, W A Broadwood, J W Atherley (Quartermaster) I have omitted the casualties 'Killed' as mentioned by Westlake but there may have been others including died of wounds/sickness If you need the 2nd Lts then let me know
wainfleet Posted 12 June , 2009 Share Posted 12 June , 2009 If not the 6th Bn, 2nd Bn is the other likely candidate - in Middle East till May 1918, when they were sent to France.
bushfighter Posted 12 June , 2009 Share Posted 12 June , 2009 Aero The wearer was George Prestage Atkinson, 2nd Bn Loyal North Lancashires. see MIC at: http://content.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=V...&pid=618543 He gained his MC commanding the Mounted Infantry Company in East Africa (this company was composed of 2LNL & 25 RF personnel). I have not found a MC citation. When that sub-unit was disbanded in 1916 he did stints in 17 Cavalry (Bengal Lancers) East Africa Squadron and then with the Kashmir Rifles in East Africa. In 1917 he re-joined 2LNL en route for Egypt where he was appointed Adjutant. In 1918 2LNL was posted to France. During an attack the CO was killed and George as Adjutant commanded and held the unit together, winning his DSO. George had been the most aggressive and successful junior commander in 2LNL during the war. Post-war his star waned as the right men from the right families with the right seniorities and connections were given the command appointments. I am sending a PM as I admire George tremendously and want to learn as much as I can about him. Harry
heliotropenz Posted 13 July , 2009 Share Posted 13 July , 2009 I am interested in George Prestage Atkinson too. His grandfather was Franklin Prestage, who was my Great grandmother's brother. It has taken me some time to find some of the descendants of Franklin Prestage so I was interested to read about George's career (and to see his uniform). I would really appreciate learning a little more about his later career.

I would be very grateful if someone could draw my posts to Bushfighter's attention. Thanks

heliotropenz Posted 20 July , 2009 Share Posted 20 July , 2009 Maybe this being my 3rd post will help things along. I would like to know more about George, of course mostly from a family history point of view. I would llike to know about his later career and where he ended up and I'd be grateful for any further information. Thanks
Guest Levanna81 Posted 17 May , 2015 Share Posted 17 May , 2015 I know this is an old thread, but George Prestage Atkinson was my great grandfather (my mum's dad's dad). Any information would be amazing to share if there are other family members!
bushfighter Posted 18 May , 2015 Share Posted 18 May , 2015 Levanners Greetings George Atkinson would make an excellent subject for an article if you wish to research him. All the information is there in the National Archives, Kew, in the War Diaries of the 2nd Bn The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment and the Mounted Infantry Company. Do you have details of his post-Great War military service? (I have summarized his Great War service in Post #6 above. Harry
