draperju Posted 11 June , 2009 Posted 11 June , 2009 Can anyone let me know where the Army Service Corps Motor Transport Training Depot was based. I believe it was in the UK, because a soldier in this section was buried in 1918 in Chollerton Churchyard Hexham. Private George Edward Cattermole. Hope that someone can help Best wishes Draperju
David Porter Posted 11 June , 2009 Posted 11 June , 2009 It was at the Greenwich Workhouse in Grove Park, Greater London
Phil Evans Posted 11 June , 2009 Posted 11 June , 2009 I agree with David on Grove Park, but his death is registered in Epsom Reg. District, not Lewisham. Deaths: December Quarter 1918 Cattermole, George E. Age: 27 Epsom 2a 104 Phil
michaeldr Posted 12 June , 2009 Posted 12 June , 2009 I wonder if he died in a military hospital at Epsom the list here http://www.1914-1918.net/hospitals_uk.htm shows at least 4 there regards Michael
michaeldr Posted 12 June , 2009 Posted 12 June , 2009 A further thought on this subject: This from Col Michael Young's history 'Army Service Corps 1902-1918' "A large workhouse in Grove Park, south-east London, was taken over in September 1914 and became No. 1 MT Reserve Depot ASC; in due course it was the nucleus of the later Lee Reception & Training Area and, when this proved inadequate, Osterley Park and a number of other locations in Camberwell, Catford, Eltham, Hounslow, Isleworth, Lee, Sydenham and Twickenham were taken over." My knowledge of the geography of this area is very weak, but would any of these other locations point to why his death is recorded at Epsom?
squirrel Posted 12 June , 2009 Posted 12 June , 2009 "Osterley Park and a number of other locations in Camberwell, Catford, Eltham, Hounslow, Isleworth, Lee, Sydenham and Twickenham were taken over." Camberwell, Catford, Eltham, Lee, Sydenham; all of these locations are in South East London or thereabouts so quite likely that he may have been in hospital in Epsom. Hounslow, Isleworth and Twickenham are in West London so probably less likely.
