Seadog Posted 4 October , 2009 Share Posted 4 October , 2009 Thanks very much for the photos John, perhaps you will be good enough to post one of the Cross when the plaque is in-situ as well. Best Wishes Norman
old-ted Posted 4 October , 2009 Author Share Posted 4 October , 2009 Hi Norman. The inscription is engraved directly into the wood of the cross and is highlighted in gold. Fissures caused by the very dry weather this summer have been sealed. Regards John
Seadog Posted 4 October , 2009 Share Posted 4 October , 2009 Thanks John - O`Dear and it all seemed to be going so well. I cannot for the life of me see that lasting a Somme winter. Where is the badge? this meant everything to those who served with the Regiment, shame that it appears to be missing. I intend no disrespect to those responsible just a bit disappointed with the result. This was the original plaque: Norman
old-ted Posted 4 October , 2009 Author Share Posted 4 October , 2009 Norman, the original cross and plaque are being kept safe. Fear not my friend John
Seadog Posted 4 October , 2009 Share Posted 4 October , 2009 Thanks for the reassurance John. I do hope that I have not overreacted to the sight of the new Cross; it just seems from your excellent photos that it has neither the substance nor quality of the “old” one. I cannot understand why the wood is so cracked when you consider the length of time the original has been standing and the cold winters and hot Somme summers that it has endured without apparently incurring such damage. I cannot also understand why the change from a metal plaque to the latest carved inscription was made and then to use gold as an infill colour which makes it almost unreadable. To my mind however the most glaring omission is the badge and I believe that this was a serious oversight. None of this is aimed at you John as you of course bear no responsibility for the current situation and I thank you for the photos and info.
