I spoke with Dean Marks a few months ago and he told me that a replacement cross had been made and that he was going out to replace the rather weathered one that had stood there since the 1980s. He had planned to do this in March but obviously changed his plans.

The new one should be up soon – this should last at least the next 25-30 years.

Well spotted Norman. The cross was removed last Saturday but Dean & Nick had to cut it off near the bottom. There is 1m of solid oak to be removed from the socket (which is no simple task) before the new cross can be installed. The area around the cross is going to be given a make over too.

John

Hi John,

Well at least you can keep an eye on things from your front window.

Hi Norman.

I think September would be realistic. Dean & pals are doing a great job.

Will keep you all informed.

Regards.

Thank you for your interest John, may I suggest that if it has not already been done, that a weatherproof notice to the effect that the cross has been removed for later replacement is affixed near to the site. Perhaps on one the many road signs etc that are already there. I know that if I were visiting this area the disappearance of the memorial cross would be a cause for concern. I realise of course that you are not primarily responsible for the present situation but your assistance will be greatly appreciated. Should of course a notice already be in-situ please disregard these remarks.

Best Wishes

Norman

PS When you mention Nick, is that Nick Fear?

Hi John

Can you confirm or otherwise whether there is any form of notice on or near the site of the removed cross. You will be aware that the cross is referred to in detail in the Holts guide to the Somme complete with photos. Recently here in Bristol two name plaques were removed from the WW2 Blitz Memorial for maintenance and without any notice as to why they had been removed, this caused distress to more that one family who came to see their loved ones name. I only mention this because the same type of situation could arise with the memorial cross. I ask for your help in this matter as I have not got any contact details for the people intimately involved and I understand that you live in the area.

Thanks for your assistance

Norman

PS For interest here is the Blitz Memorial as mentioned:

Note the flowers left by a family whose relatives name(s) were on the missing plaques.

Hi Norman.

I am back home on Thursday evening (18th) and will place a notice on one of the road signs on Friday. I am not officially involved with the memorial but I'm sure Dean would approve.

John that is very kind of you and much appreciated. I have great respect for what Dean and others are doing and I can assure them that this Memorial Cross means so much to those with relatives who served and sometime died in the battalion. Please post a photo of your notice as I have reported the removal of the cross both on the Glosters Forum and on my photo in Flickr of course.

Good Work John

Michelle are you referring to Nick Fear?, if so a great guy and extremely knowledgeable on the “Bristols” he has helped me with this subject in the past. Of course if it is not Nick Fear you are talking about then have a nice day anyway :D

Thanks Michelle, Nick was very helpful when I was looking for Wedge Wood on the Somme, scene of a successful but in terms of losses, disaster for the Battalion. You may have already seen this, the Battalions Old Comrades plaque now in the safe custody of the City Council at St Nicholas Church.

Norman
