Ivor Lee Posted 10 June , 2009 Share Posted 10 June , 2009 Can any of the Cameron Highlander experts help with regard to the death of James Horn, 7th Battalion Cameron Highlanders? I believe he died of wounds so am trying to find out when he was wounded. Many thanks Ivor

PPCLI Posted 11 June , 2009 Share Posted 11 June , 2009 Hi Ivor, I don't have copies of the war diary but a few years ago bought a book written by forum member, Neil Richardson; Sense of Duty was written about his great-grandfather, John Syme, a Private with the 7th Cameron Highlanders. Page 85/6: By 23 July [1917] the 7th Camerons were back in the front line at a place called 'Railway Dugout'. From here numerous trench raids were carried out and on one occasion, after being given little if no time to prepare, D Company and three platoons of A Company carried out a daylight raid. They succeeded in capturing an officer and 39 other ranks and a machine gun with the loss of only 1 man. For this raid they were rightly praised by the General Officer Commanding 15th Division. So, if he died in the next few days after he was wounded, it is possible that he took part in one of these raids. Just something for you to go until the war diary can be checked. It may also be worth asking whether anyone has a copy of The History of the 7th Battalion Cameron Highlanders by Sandilands and MacCleod. All the best, Stuart
