Paul Nixon Posted 10 April , 2004 Share Posted 10 April , 2004 Soup was also conveyed in large cannisters which were worn rucksack-fashion by the men responsible for delivering it. There is a photo in one of the Osprey books. My great uncle, Alf Nixon, remembered delivering soup in this way . To save time and because he got fed up screwing and unscrewing the lid of the cannister, he carried it on his back with the lid off. All was fine until he ducked when a shell burst close by and he ended up with hot soup down his neck. As he said, when the soldiers asked him if he had got any soup left he said, "No, but you can have a lick of my collar if you like."
