Good evening all. I'm researching 201290 (4029) Sjt Donald Gray DCM and Bar of the 4th Seaforth Highlanders.

Does anyone have any 4th Seaforth War Diary's they could check through to see if he is mentioned. Month and year would be handy so I can order the pages from PRO/NA.

Thank you all.

Regards

Ray

Hi

Not from the War Diary but from the Battalion history:

Sergeant D Gray's award of the DCM was announced on 18th July 1917, when the Battalion was out of the line at Houtkerque. The award of the Bar to the DCM was made on 12th December 1917

Will have a look to see how he won them

Regards

Martin

Almost certainly won the DCM for the following action:

Attacked a German Strong-point under a railway embankment that had prevented the advance on the Chemical Works at Roeux. A party under Sgt D Gray of No3 Co. and L/Cpl Lane met with "astonishing" success and the position was taken, after a short struggle, by 11.15am on 23rd April 1917. 20 enemy were killed and 30 taken prisoner without a single Seaforth casualty. No3 Co. was able to move through the Chemical Works and take up a position beyond.
