matteyre Posted 8 June , 2009 Share Posted 8 June , 2009 I'm trying to track down details of 2nd Lt A N Eyre 1/6th Sherwoods, attached to the 15th Sherwoods on the 25th of Oct 1916, along with 2nd Lts C K Covington and G Noon attached from 1/6 on the same day. I've not seen any references in "the Blast of War", anyone shed any light on them? thanks, Matt
bantamforgot Posted 8 June , 2009 Share Posted 8 June , 2009 Sorry nothing on them in my books on the Bantams I presume they survived? Colin.
stevem49 Posted 8 June , 2009 Share Posted 8 June , 2009 I cannot see them on the list of men in France with the 1/6th! If you change the heading to 1/6th - Mike Briggs will no doubt be along. The expert on 1/6th. sm
Muerrisch Posted 9 June , 2009 Share Posted 9 June , 2009 The battalion war diary is at Kew. WDs usually recorded all officer arrivals and departures. When I wrote Blast of War I don't think I came across them across them
Andrew Hesketh Posted 9 June , 2009 Share Posted 9 June , 2009 As Steve says, Mike is the man you want for this question.
matteyre Posted 9 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 9 June , 2009 They don't show up in the Men of the High Peak book either, and Eddie can't throw any more light on them from the battalion records.... would the Bantams have needed officer reinforcements on that particular day/time? Andrew Hesketh Posted 9 June , 2009 Share Posted 9 June , 2009 Off the top of my head I can't remember the exact date, but they had recently been mauled near Maltz Horn Farm / Guillemont, so 'yes'.
bantamforgot Posted 9 June , 2009 Share Posted 9 June , 2009 They did lose 3 officers about that time, kia, wd, msg. Perhaps this was the reason for replacements. Where did you get your initial info. from? Colin.
bantamforgot Posted 9 June , 2009 Share Posted 9 June , 2009 They were mauled back in July, when they lost 10 officers kia & several wounded but the 35th. were relieved (apart from the 19N.Fus.) in August before moving to Candas & on to Arras. Andrew Hesketh Posted 9 June , 2009 Share Posted 9 June , 2009 Was it July? In my mind it was later. Thanks for the correction. 20 July (just checked) was the battle I referred to above, so I guess this was too early to be the reason for October replacements. Sorry if I threw you off the scent for a while.
matteyre Posted 9 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 9 June , 2009 I got my info from the Sherwood Foresters regimental lists, which show all the officer contingent throughout the war...A N Eyre is shown as promoted to Lt then transferring to the RFC in 1918 which is abbreviated as ( f.c.), but there is no obvious trace of where he was with the 15th or 6th from Oct 1916 to March 1918.. will maybe try the library in Chesterfield for local press reports, as there is a stained glass window in his memory in the crooked spire... stevem49 Posted 9 June , 2009 Share Posted 9 June , 2009 It could be that their 1/6th link was only on paper and they went straight to another unit. I had some officers still attached to 3rd Battalion when killed or wounded with 9th Bn. The 15th Bn diaries does not mention any new officers. There was a trench raid on the night of 25th October but no officer losses. steve
matteyre Posted 9 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 9 June , 2009 Eddie at the WFR museum reckons he is definitely 1/6th,but will see if local papers shed more light...
stevem49 Posted 9 June , 2009 Share Posted 9 June , 2009 I can see nothing about them in 1/6th for 25th October. As I mentioned your best bet is Mike Briggs. best of luck Steve

bantamforgot Posted 9 June , 2009 Share Posted 9 June , 2009 Steve, I have to hold my hand up, there is a misprint in my book it goes from early October , then to September, then back to October.(page 68 .35th. Division ) Colin.
mikebriggs Posted 9 June , 2009 Share Posted 9 June , 2009 Matt, I have quite a few of the 15th Battn War Diaries, but don't see any mention of those Officers, but happy to e-mail them to you if you want a looksee. (Daft question, probably, but have you checked Officers records at Kew?) Anyway, Crescens Kingsley Covington won the MC with the 6th Battn (LG 26.7.18) and Gilbert Noon joined the RFC from N & D and was killed in action 29.11.17. That gives you a time frame; perhaps they were only lent to the 15th Battn? cheers Mike
mikebriggs Posted 9 June , 2009 Share Posted 9 June , 2009 Another thought occured to me:- Arthur Eyre is in the RFC Medal Role (168/80), whilst Noon (who also served with RFC) is in N & D Medal Roll (OFF/162_179); interesting Matt, have you checked out these original medal rolls in KEW to see if any info on dates of transfer & previous Battns etc ? matteyre Posted 10 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 10 June , 2009 have checked the list again, which shows Lt Covington as still attached 15th 25th April 1918, MC, and with crossed swords to show special reserve, with A N Eyre as Lt f.c. as at 5th April 1918

matteyre Posted 13 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 13 June , 2009 have checked with local press reports. He joined Nottingham University OTC in Nov 1915 prior to his commission in Oct 1916. They also say that he went to the Western Front in January 1917... does this help identify whether he was with 6th or 15th battalion?
