trooper23 Posted 7 June , 2009 Share Posted 7 June , 2009 Relatively new to the forum so please bear with me chaps! I recently got back from visiting the Somme with my Dad and brother (1st visit). While there we visited Serre Road No 2 cemetery on the Mailly-Maillet to Serre Road (D919). I crossed the road and climbed the bank (north side of the road) to get a better overall picture of the entrance. Took the picture and was about to climb down when I saw right on the edge of the ploughed field at my feet two parts of a British bayonet. I attach a picture of what it looked like 93 years ago. I have cleaned it up (still in a state) but will mount it and give it to Dad for his 80th. I intend putting a picture of the real thing underneath and want to confirm that this is the area the 1/8th Warwicks attacked as I would like to put a picture of the unit cap badge over the item too. Any confirmation, or otherwse, that the 1/8th Warwicks were indeed in action on the north side of the road would be most appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Chris_Baker Posted 7 June , 2009 Share Posted 7 June , 2009 Quite right. 1/8th crossed the road (theoretically at a bit of an angle) at the front face of the cemetery and to its left as you look out from the cemetery across the road. Whether the bits of bayonet relate to it is another matter, but it is nice to think so.
Terry Carter Posted 7 June , 2009 Share Posted 7 June , 2009 YES.... you are correct. The Heidenkopf Redoubt jutted out from the German Front Line and the field to the left of Serre Rd No.2 (looking at front of the Cemetery) is the area of the HeidenKopf. The 1/8 followed by the 1/6 had an attack frontage from the left hand wall of the Cemetery down towards the French Chapel further along the road. I will try and get a map for you. Regards Terry OOPs Chris beat me to it!

trenchtrotter Posted 7 June , 2009 Share Posted 7 June , 2009 Jerry, Two points, I left the two parts there when I found them this March. Exactly where you describe. I placed them there and took the same image as you. They were not found together but in the field. Three years ago my brother found a Warks shoulder title in the field confirming your belief. There is a thread on it on the forum with an image. I am happy the two pieces have found a good home!! Regards TT
