Chris_Baker Posted 5 June , 2009 Share Posted 5 June , 2009 A man enlists into the (new) regular army in September 1914. He is wounded in 1915. On recovery in 1916 he is posted to the 2/5th Bedfords. He is renumbered to seven digits in early 1917 and some time after goes to serve with 1/5th Battalion in Palestine. My question: would he have been renumbered when being posted from regular to TF? I believe so, but can anyone confirm?
eltoro1960 Posted 5 June , 2009 Share Posted 5 June , 2009 Hi Chris From my research based on the 8th Royal Scots, it varies , I have seen several post 1917 casualties with 5 digit service numbers and others who have adopted the new 6 digit numbers. There didn't seem to be a hard and fast pattern but nen joining from New Army before the renumbering seem to have kept their original number until 1917 when they were renumbered with everybody else, those after the renumbering don't seem to change. Yes, ACI 1840 23/09/1916; Proceedure in connection with the Attatchment, Posting, Transfer and Drafting of the Regular Army and Territorial Force. Regular soldier posted to a Territorial Force unit of the same corps will be allotted a Territorial Force Number; and vice versa.
