But I don't know if the answer to your post is contained there. We would need an expert on the East African campaign.

The railway was under military control during WW1 and the army actually added lines to the system. The railway and water transport were the only ways of moving troops long distances during the campaign.

There are 68 war graves to men of the East African Railways - both European and local personnel.
