archangel9 Posted 5 June , 2009 Share Posted 5 June , 2009 There are similar examples, e.g. - 16244 ROBERTS Sub-Conductor East African Railways http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...casualty=123759 15544 TILBURY Driver East African Railways http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...casualty=124475 And it seems East African Railways staff were awarded medals - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalog...=31000*-2118134 This ebook by Robert Valentine Dolbey might make interesting reading on the subject - http://www.scribd.com/doc/231061/Sketches-...-Dolbey?page=35 But I don't know if the answer to your post is contained there. We would need an expert on the East African campaign. John

Terry Denham Posted 6 June , 2009 Share Posted 6 June , 2009 The railway was under military control during WW1 and the army actually added lines to the system. The railway and water transport were the only ways of moving troops long distances during the campaign. There are 68 war graves to men of the East African Railways - both European and local personnel.
