Stephen White Posted 9 April , 2004 Share Posted 9 April , 2004 During my visit to the PRO yesterday i found my Great Grandfather's Militia Attestation Papers in WO 96/123.(it was a great moment). He was attested to the 6th Royal Warwicks on 21.12.1899,the age he gives is 18 years and 2 months. This is nearly 4 years younger than we believed him to be at the time. The papers are his, all the other details are right, including his service number. He could have been wrong about his age or lied of course. On checking through dozens of the other papers, i couldn't find anyone who was older than 20 when they attested, regardless of whether it was 1885 or 1907 !!.Which leads to ask was there an age limit for men wishing to join the Militia at the time ??.
