Sgt William Willows of the West Riding regiment # 3/11364 medal record card has the following numbers on it. 1st Column Roll 0/2/101/B4 Page 374. 2nd Column do do.Theses numbers have a *in front of them and an * D.C.M. is above them next to his name. the 3rd column reads roll 0/2/3 B Page 469. Can someone explain what these entries mean?

The other entries seem self explanatory.

If this is who I think it is he would have seen service in South Africa in 1901/2, returned to civvie street and re-enlisted for WW1.

Hi Airman and welcome to the forum. Can I suggest that you have a look at this located in the Long, Long Trail - top left on grey bar.

Good luck with your quest

Hi

He got his DCM with 2nd Battalion it was gazzetted 1-1-18 there should be a citation in the London Gazette.

As you say probably in the National Reserves and recalled in 1914 ive just been researching a 2nd batt lad recalled in 1914 and then captured at Mons he rejoined the West Ridings at Portobello Barracks Dublin in August 1914.

Where was he from?

Heres the campaign MIC looks like he was sent over from Reserve Batt(3rd) in 1915 . His DCM MIC states Date 1-1-18 gazetted with 2nd Batt.

Hi Diane the citation for Sgt William Willows reads as follows:-

3/11364 Sjt. W. Willows, W. Rid. R. (Colne) (LG 17 Apr. 1918)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As battalion signalling Serjeant he remained continuously on duty during the whole time, in which active, operations were in progress, working under heavy shell fire, in order to ensure that communication was maintained. He has shown continuous devotion to duty, and has never failed to maintain the same high standard of efficiency throughout the operations.

Hope this is of some help Kindest Regards DaveC

Airman

It might be that the * is to do with the 1915 Star Medal being marked to him as a Corporal, and the other medals marked to him as a Sergeant.

Thanks for the tip. I found his Citation on page4691 of the London Gazette. He came from Colne in East Lancs and first joined the regiment in 1900/1. If he was discharged and then re-enlisted for WW1 would he have kept the same service number?
