Ron Morris Posted 4 June , 2009 Share Posted 4 June , 2009 I have found a reference in a service record to what looks like 1028 Company, Army Service Corps. Was there such a company? If so, can anyone tell me anything about it? Regards, Ron.
Ron Clifton Posted 4 June , 2009 Share Posted 4 June , 2009 Hello Ron Colonel Michael Young' book "Army Service Corps 1902 - 1918" has a full list of all the ASC Companies (around 1200 in all) serving in the Great War. 1028 Company was formed in Mesopotamia on 13 October 1917, to serve as transport for the guns and ammunition of 392, 394, 395 and 396 Siege Batteries, Royal Garrison Artillery. It was attached to Army Troops and its War Diary is in the National Archives at Kew in file WO95/5008. In July 1919 it was sent to India and became 34th (Indian) Mechanical Transport Company in 1921. Its War Diary for India is in WO95/5390. Mikke Young's book has a photo of a caterpillar tractor pulling one of these guns in Mespot, although it does not say which company was involved. Good hunting! Ron
Ron Morris Posted 4 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 4 June , 2009 Hi Ron, Thanks very much for the information about 1028 Company, ASC. Unfortunately, the person I am researching served in France from March, 1916 to the end of the war so perhaps I have misread the number. The last numeral is written on top of a word on the line above, making it hard to decipher. Perhaps it is 1026. Colonel Michael Young's book sounds like an excellent resource. Many thanks for your help! Regards, Ron.
Ron Clifton Posted 4 June , 2009 Share Posted 4 June , 2009 Hello Ron Apart from 1021 and 1022 which were stationed in the UK, the only company in the 102x range which did NOT serve in Mespot was 1029 Co, also formed in Oct 1917. This served on the Western Front as an auxiliary MT company with the Special Brigade RE - the specialist gas warfare unit. Ron
Ron Morris Posted 4 June , 2009 Author Share Posted 4 June , 2009 Ron, That sounds more likely and "1029" could well be what I am trying to read. Again, many thanks for your help! Regards, Ron.
