Herbert Lowry - WR/504834 - Royal Engineers

As some of you will know I have been attempting to find out which unit of the IWT my grandfather served with. So far, I have had no luck.

A recent review of his service record has shown up one entry that, possibly, could help trace his unit. I have attached a copy of the rear side of his Casualty Card on which can be seen an entry marked "6 CMB" in the column "From Whom Received".

Have any of the Royal Engineers experts got any idea what this refers to?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

It looks like it's a Medical Board reference classifying him as Category B3. A dead end, I think.... :(

Have you tried tracing 2/Lt F A E Allen who appears on his conduct sheet? Admittedly this could be a clerk at a UK base....

WO338 shows F A E Allen, Gen List (IWT RE) as old No. 171601, hence he is:

Piece details WO 339/87816

Record Summary

Scope and content ALLEN F

Covering dates [1914-1922]

Availability Open Document, Open Description, Normal Closure before FOI Act: 30 years

Former reference (Department) 171601

Steve.

Hi Steve,

Long time no see. Hope you are OK, and Thanks for the reply.

I hadn't looked at 2/Lt Allen but I will give it a try, in case it throws something up.

Thanks again for taking the time & trouble with this post.

Regards

Paul J.
