certacito79 Posted 31 May , 2009 Share Posted 31 May , 2009 I am compiling a database of the 16th Lancers and so far its just a case of luck and going through any sources availiable to get togther a "nominal roll" that also includes info on who was in each squadron. This was also changing on a regular basis. I dont know what the 9th Lancers Regimental History is like but its a long shot. I have found the CWGC sometimes includes the squadron depending on what information was supplied (and paid for) to be included on headstones for men that died. There are some Regimental Archives for all the lancer regiments are held in storage at Grantham with the Queens Royal Lancers HQ, but as I have found there are no definitive lists and just detective work really. per ardua per mare per terram Posted 31 May , 2009 Share Posted 31 May , 2009 Welcome to the forum Is there any indication in WO 95/1113 9 (Queen's Royal) Lancers 1914 Aug. - 1919 Mar.?
armourersergeant Posted 31 May , 2009 Share Posted 31 May , 2009 I have done a fair bit of research on David Campbell who was the commander of 9th Lancers in 1914. I have some scans of the Regt history for that period, but it does not give a list of officers and men. You are welcome to the copies but they are not the best, I was having problems with my camera at the time and some images are blurred. It may be possible to ascertain officers and squadrons but men will be far more difficult. The regimental museum may also be able to help, they are in Derby but the last time I tried to visit they were closed for refurb. They may have muster rolls etc. Regards Arm Ps who you after? David_Underdown Posted 28 October , 2009 Share Posted 28 October , 2009 I have done a fair bit of research on David Campbell who was the commander of 9th Lancers in 1914. Coincidentally I've also been researching him (start of an article put together at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:David_Un...h_Army_officer)). This, http://www.firstworldwar.bham.ac.uk/biblio...ography_A-K.doc suggests an interesting looking article about him, ‘Divisional Commander in France: General Sir David Campbell GCB’, Army Quarterly and Defence Journal, 118 (2) (April 1988), pp. ??, by Donald Cook but I've not managed to track it down yet. You don't ahve it do you?

armourersergeant Posted 29 October , 2009 Share Posted 29 October , 2009 David, May I ask what drew you to Soarer Campbell? I find him a very competent commander and one of the best divisional commanders of the Great War. Regards Arm ----------- ps I see you found both John Bourne's article on the man and mine at my website re 21st division.

David_Underdown Posted 29 October , 2009 Share Posted 29 October , 2009 David, May I ask what drew you to Soarer Campbell? I happened to go to the Birmingham website looking for something else, and he was the latest "Donkey" (definitely seems unfair in his case), and the article made him sound a wonderful character. If you can find the page numbers, the British Library should be able to provide it for you.
astrang1 Posted 3 January , 2011 Share Posted 3 January , 2011 Hello, Just came across this post. My wifes Grandfather served in the 9th Lancers from 1914 to approx 1932. I believe there is a Regimental history in the family which I will try to read and take some notes from next visit to the in-laws. Might be a few weeks. Best wishes, Al
sotonmate Posted 3 January , 2011 Share Posted 3 January , 2011 Nigel I have been looking at quite a few War Diaries for the Aug 1914 mobilisation. On my last visit it was for the Cavalry Division, having been through the first 6 Divisions in previous visits.I would say it would be well worth seeing if the War Diary for 9 Lancers has any Roll (WO95/1113,the same number as that for 18 Lancers). I have seen a few Rolls along the way and there just might be one to see here also.I would like to say there was but my mission did not include seeking this data !
