martinclift Posted 29 May , 2009 Share Posted 29 May , 2009 John served on many ships prior to these below, however the majority of his service was with Collingwood. Other records show many times with Vivid I & Vivid II HMS Collingwood 26th March 1912 - 30th September 1917 HMS Vivid I 1st October 1917 - 26th February 1918 HMS Endymion 27th February 1918 - 14th October 1918 HMS Vivid I 15th October 1918 - 5th November 1918 When he died The family story says that whilst his ship was in the Med. he and some pals went ashore to get ammunition to troops pinned down. During this brave action he was wounded. I have no idea where and when, but thought anyone who knows the whereabouts of these ships might be able to shed some light on the matter. Also was Vivid I & II not actually ships? In this image John is on the right. Many thanks Martin
sotonmate Posted 29 May , 2009 Share Posted 29 May , 2009 Martin It is likely to have been HMS COLLINGWOOD in the Med,probably off Gallipoli or Egypt/Palestine. There are several Ship's Logs for this ship at Kew running right through the War. They run from ADM 53/38185 from 1914-15 through to 38202 to Dec 1918. I would try ADM53/38187 from 1.3.1915 to 30.6.1916 as it would cover the best and likely periods. I think the Vivids were shore establishments and Endymion a Depot ship for trawlers in the Aegean in 1918. Sotonmate

During this brave action he was wounded. If he was wounded it should be noted on his entry in the service register and I would have expected a mention of a hurt certificate. At Kew there are also registers of the killed and wounded ADM 104/145 to ADM 104/149, indexed in ADM 104/140 - ADM 104/143.
