Hi All

Looking for any and all advice re WW1 military sites of interest - my wife and I are visiting Turkey (Gallipoli), Paris (Somme), London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, The Highlands, New York, San Francisco, and Hong Kong. All recommendations and advice welcomed.

As well as Gallipoli you could visit the islands, such as Lemnos and also Greece (you might find it hard to go from Turkey) for Salonika.

The national Museums such as Imperial War Museum (London, Manchester and Duxford) and National Army Museum, and Regimental Museums should be included. The Royal Naval, Submarine & Royal Marines Museums and Explosion in the vacinity of Portsmouth, Southsea & Gosport are helpful for the RND & Gallipoli.

There's a start.

I second the recommendation of the Imperial War Museum (Manchester & Duxford I have yet to discover). The IWM in London is a real gem.

It has its own history, being formerly one of the buildings for the Bethlem Hospital - otherwise known as 'Bedlam'.

In its favour are;

  • wonderful displays
  • friendly & helpful staff
  • reading room if you pre-research & pre-book
  • outside spaces for recharging your batteries
  • and it's not too big!
I used to work round the corner (teaching art), and took students there to draw. I find it visually very stimulating. More recently, I've had some success in my own research there (Smyrna 1922) and found the staff very helpful.

What about the National Maritime Museum? Apart from anything else, it's in a lovely part of London.

I would be interested to hear about your BIG TOUR and other people's suggestions. I have a big trip (or two) of my own brewing (2010?) and want to visit Turkey (Gallipoli & Izmir) the West Coast of the States and ... New Zealand! So I may be posing similar questions in the not-too-distant future.

Cardiff- Cardiff castle with regimental museums to Welsh and 2nd Dragoon guards. Lots of pubs try Brains SA (skull attack) if your not driving. Museum of Welsh life St Fagans ( not much WW1 but its a lovely place to spend an hour or three).

Hi Zack,

If you are in Wales, I would also recommend the Royal Regiment of Wales museum in Brecon, with good history on some of the old regiments such as South Wales Borderers, Monmouthshire Regiment etc.

Good sections ranging from the Zulu war up to Korea, and interesting collection of uniforms, arms and medals

Regards,

Mike

If Cardiff is on your list, in the main hall of the National Musem of Wales (entrance free), you will find two large WW1 paintings by Frank Brangwyn, one of which is "Tank in Action". In the small Gorsedd Gardens opposite the museum are statues of David Lloyd George and of Ninian Crichton-Stuart in uniform. He was MP for Cardiff and was killed at Loos when CO of the 1/6th Welsh.

Also, in Alexandra Gardens to the rear of the museum is the Welsh National War Memorial, along with smaller memorials for the Spanish Civil War, Falklands etc.

There are a few WW1 memorials in St. John's Church.

If you do a tour of the Millennium Stadium, look out for the (small) memorial tablet to the Welsh rugby internationals who died in WW1 and WW2.

All are in the city centre, as is the castle and Welsh Regiment museum.

And. as Welshdoc has already said, don't leave without trying the local beer but I would recommend Brains Dark!

You cannot get to Gallipoli by air from Izmir so it is approx 5 hour drive. To get to Izmir you have to fly Istanbul.

Heathrow and Brum do flights.

Steve,

Thanks for the information on travelling between Istanbul and Izmir. I imagine, when the time comes, I will look into using the train. I see there is one - with a ferry across the Sea of Marmora which takes about 6.5 hours.
