Nigel Marshall Posted 21 May , 2009 Share Posted 21 May , 2009 Hello Bruce, I've had a look at this from the angle of the inscription saying RMRE BEF France, and taking the overseas service as a confirmation that this will mean there are medals involved somewhere. I searched the MIC listings at the NA site, and found nothing concrete (Royal Engineers.... geddit?), and so I checked out what their abbreviations would be using this list, but the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia) are not listed. This makes me think that they must be lumped in with their mainstream RE mates. If this is the case, there is a tenative candidate, being that one RP Edwards has both Monmouthshire and RE mentioned on his MIC. What do you think? If I find anything else which looks like a possible, I know where to find you. Cheers, Nigel
SteveE Posted 21 May , 2009 Share Posted 21 May , 2009 Tafski Being a member of the RMRE you're probably looking for a man who had either a 4-digit number or a 6-digit Royal Engineers number starting 38****. The Special Reserve units of the Royal Engineers (Anglesey and Monmouthshire) were renumbered (not sure when) taking their existing four-digit number and adding 38 (Monmouth) or 39 (Anglesey) to the front. They were renumbered again in early 1918 to the WR/279*** range of numbers. Based on that you're probably looking at one of these three.... 1. Medal card of Edwards, Richards Corps Regiment No Rank Royal Engineers 8560 Sapper Royal Engineers 388560 Sapper Date 1914-1920 Catalogue reference WO 372/6 2. Medal card of Edwards, Rees Corps Regiment No Rank Royal Engineers 6562 Sapper Royal Engineers 386562 Sapper Date 1914-1920 Catalogue reference WO 372/6 3. Medal card of Edwards, Robert H Corps Regiment No Rank Royal Engineers 388995 Driver Royal Engineers 446715 Driver Date 1914-1920 Catalogue reference WO 372/6 I personally would favour either 1 or 2. Hope it helps. Steve
