I was away last week and couldn't ask the pals to spare a thought for one of my 'lads' on the 11th May.

Private Brock was a Reservist recalled with my grandad to 'C' Company, 1st Cheshires, at the outbreak of the War. He fought at Audregnies in the Cheshire's famous rearguard action and was badly wounded and taken prisoner, spending a year as a p.o.w.

He was subsequently repatriated during a prisoner exchange and admitted to the 3rd London General Hospital on the 25th August 1915. He was subsequently discharged as no longer physically fit for war service in December 1915. He was awarded a pension. However, through an oversight, Private Brook did not have an armlet issued to him and it seems he received abuse and pressure for not being identified as having served.

Sadly, Private Brock committed suicide on 11 May 1916 and is buried in St Matthew Churchyard, Haslington. His death prompted questions in Parliament and is reported in Hansard, 27 June 1916 vol 83 c703.

Spare a thought for him, please.

Graham
