Moonraker Posted 15 May , 2009 Share Posted 15 May , 2009 I'm not aware of any Great War activity that would have led to a shell landing at this spot. There was a wireless station just over a mile to the north on the south side of Morgan's Hill. This evolved from a Marconi wireless station, the building of which was almost completed when war broke out; it was then taken over by Military Intelligence to track Zeppelins and monitor other countries' wireless transmissions. I don't know much about postwar military activities, though in the 1940s-1950s (I think) there was a range, probably used by artillery, south of Beckhampton and about 2.5 miles North East of where the shell was found. Any overshoot would have been over the village of Bishops Cannings, and seems unlikely. Having said that, I remember c1962 inspecting a shell crater in the grounds of a hotel at Market Lavington, the result of an overshoot from the Westdown artillery range. JPAE Posted 15 May , 2009 Author Share Posted 15 May , 2009 Thought I heard WW1 reference-- thanks for the confirmation. Looks like they used a bit of guesswork. Too late to check it now! Phil.
