Remembered Today:

Boezinghe 1915 - Where were the 1/4 Y & L (Hallamshire) Bn

Hello all,

Doing some research into the 1/4 York and Lancaster Bn, my Gt Grandfathers unit, and am currently reading the unit history by D P Grant which describes the unit in the trenches at Boezinghe in mid 1915 onwards.

My question is - are the preserved trenches at Boezinghe part of the line the unit held? I understand from other posts/websites the concreted preserved trenches are the 1917 ones with duckboards laid out behind to the 1915 line? I'm gathering info up to visit the areas where my Gt G'father lived and fought so any info on this would be great. Anyone any trench maps or anything to share?

Many thanks,

Martin

Martin,

You may be interested in some articles on my (former and late (no longer updated) ) website

http://www.mausershooters.org/~diggers/

Several sections about our work on the Boezinge Canal bank site, but I would advise you to click on ACTIVITIES, and you will find a number of articles.

The ones that may interest you are the ones about

- Yorkshire Trench (indeed, from 1917)

- 6 - 9 July 1915 a small but successful operation.

Yes, I know, 4/Y&L was not involved then, but they were a couple of days later when they arrived there.

If my research (of a couple of years ago) is correct,

for 12 July 1915 : 4 KiA

for 13 July 9 KiA and 2 DoW

for 14 July 1 DoW

Many thanks Aurel.

Great web-site and photo's/articles with lots of information. Fascinating to see the how well preserved things like duckboards and A frames are, and also the constant reminders of the human cost almost frozen in time and so near the surface.

Thanks for the response.

Kind regards,

Martin

Martin,

Glad you liked it, and also that apparently you went to the website before today. For I have just seen (this afternoon) it is no longer accessible.

(Well, not really a surprise, it was bound to happen sooner or later. It was still on the internet "by accident".)

Hi Aurel - only looked yesterday - take out the ~ symbol from the web address and the site is accessible. Would be a great loss if this site went down as it provides an excellent record of the place and the hard work done.

Kind regards,

Martin
