JDB Posted 14 May , 2009 Share Posted 14 May , 2009 Hello, I'm hoping for some help on Corporal Willian Henry Hurlock if possible please. He was a Londoner born in 1897 who survived the war. His medal index card gives his regt as the 'Liverpools' (Kings Liverpool I guess?) but does not give a battlion. His number was 380280 and it has been suggested this indicates he may have been with the 25th battalion. Do you think this is correct and does anyone know anything about this unit please? All I know is that he served at Ypres at some point. Also, he was wounded (date unknown) but after recovery he served in Ireland. Can anyone tell me if this fits in with the record of the 25th battalion - I haven't had much luck in finding out which divsion the 25th were with or where they were deployed from 1916 to the end of the war. I'd be grateful for any advice. Jane
pbrydon Posted 15 May , 2009 Share Posted 15 May , 2009 The number is one for the 25th Kings Liverpools ( 380001-405000 ) but according to Westlake "The Territorial Battalions " The battalion was formed in 1915 as 43rd Provisional Battalion (TF) and became the 25th Bn KLR in 1917 and in 1918 served in France as a Garrison Guard Battalion with 59th Div and was disbanded in later in Egypt. I have a couple of medal groups to the 25th Liverpools but the recipeints served with other units prior to joining this battalion which might have been the case with your relative. P.B. JDB Posted 15 May , 2009 Author Share Posted 15 May , 2009 Thanks ever so much...that bit confrims the 25th Kings Liverpool Regiment for which I'm grateful. Does anyone happen to know where they were and which division they were attached to in 1917 and before they went to France in 1918? P.B. - I was interested in your medals to soldiers who had served with other units first and wondered why these men would have been transferred to the 25th battalion. I note this battalion was known as a garrison battalion initially - do you think this indicates the 25th were in some way a unit of soldiers who had served elsewhere but then perhaps had been wounded, or were in some other way considered not quite fit for front line service - at least until they were combed out again as things got even more desperate in 1918?? Then again, I thought this would have been more the role of the labour corps.... Jane
