colin.green14 Posted 14 May , 2009 Share Posted 14 May , 2009 Hi All, Help would be appreciated from any Wiltshire Regt. specialist on the following William John Boscombe Born about 1896 2nd Battalion Wiltshire regt. Regtml. No: 3/9201 Date of Death 12: Jun 1917 Son of Mr. F. W. and Mrs. M. J. Boscombe, of Apsley House, Queenswood Rd., Broughton, Stockbridge, Hants. Native of Trowbridge, Wilts. Buried: NIEDERZWEHREN CEMETERY. According to his MIC, William landed in France 7th October 1914, with the 2nd Battalion. I am assuming that as the William is buried in Germany that he became a POW at some point. If anyone can help with any additional information it would be very helpful. sotonmate Posted 14 May , 2009 Share Posted 14 May , 2009 Colin Take a read in The Wardrobe ,the site for Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiments. They have War Diaries online and you could go through the 2 Wilts one (eventually as it's a bit tiresome having to ask for each page seperately): https://www.thewardrobe.org.uk/index.php 2 Wilts were part of 21 Brigade of 7 Division which landed in Boulogne on 7 Oct 1914. In Dec 1915 21 Brigade transferred to 30 Division. Medal Index Card shows the refs if you want to look at the original medal rolls, kept at Kew in the WO329 series of ledgers: 1914 Star : C/1/4 page 11 British War and Victory Medals: C/1/102B15 page 1705 There might be a date on one of the Rolls saying when he was captured. Paul Nixon Posted 15 May , 2009 Share Posted 15 May , 2009 His number indicates that he originally joined the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion in late October or early November 1909. In all likelihood he would have then transferred to a regular battalion shortly after war was declared. Paul
